Taking cognisance of the “encounter” deaths in Chennai in the early hours of Thursday of five persons, suspected to be behind two bank robberies, the National Human Rights Commission on Friday sought a report from the Tamil Nadu Director General of Police on the matter.

The NHRC also directed the District Magistrate and the Senior Superintendent of Police to investigate the incident. The three officers have been ordered to submit their response within eight weeks of the notice.

The Commission sought reports of the magisterial enquiry and post-mortem, besides an independent investigation report as per its guidelines.
