The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probing the whereabouts of C. Anitha Nair (37) of Ongallur and her husband C. Ramachandran (39) of Kannadi in Palakkad district has sought information on the couple.

According to sources in the agency, Ramachandran, Anitha and their son were living in Hyderabad. In January 2003, the woman went to Maldives after she got appointment as teacher in a private school there.

A few months later, she came on leave to meet her family in Hyderabad. On December 12, 2003, Anitha took a flight to Male from Tiruvananthapuram. The woman's whereabouts were not known after that and the family could not contact her.

Her father Achuthan Nair lodged a complaint with the Palakkad police and a missing woman case was registered in the Pattambi police station. The case was later transferred to the Special Crimes Branch of the CBI.

During investigation it came to light that a few other teachers had travelled with Anitha on the flight she took to Maldives. On reaching Male, she remained at the airport while others left. The next day, she took a flight back to Tiruvananthapuram and went to Colombo via Chennai on December 29, 2003.

Investigators said the woman developed intimacy with one Sreerangan alias Surang of Sri Lanka who worked as a receptionist at a hotel in Maldives. Enquiries made at Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh confirmed that Anitha last came to India on July 10, 2004 from Colombo.

After the woman went missing, her husband Ramachandran left a note at home saying he could not live without his wife and vanished. Despite strenuous efforts, CBI officials could not trace Ramachandran. Investigators could not gather much details about Sreerangan either.

With the help of National Crime Record Bureau, police compared the profile of the missing persons with those of unclaimed bodies recovered from across the country in recent years, a CBI official said.

The CBI's Special Crimes Branch located at ‘A' Wing, third floor, Rajaji Bhavan, Besant Nagar, Chennai has appealed to the people to share any information they had on Anitha Nair, Ramachandran and Sreerangan. Information could also be given by dialling 044- 24917144, 24468416, Mobile 9500046341 and 9790852288.
