In the last four days, about one lakh salaried persons from Chennai, Kancheepuram and Tambaram regions have filed their Income Tax returns through special return receipt counters.

e-filing

Chief Commissioner of Income Tax–1 Prema Malini Vasan said on Sunday there was a drop of nearly 40 per cent in the number of people filing returns this year as compared to last year due to tremendous increase in e-filing and also because of exemption of those with an annual income limit of Rs.5 lakh from filing returns.

Kancheepuram and Tambaram regions accounted for nearly 12,000 filings, while the Chennai region accounted for the rest.

40 counters

The Income Tax department operated 40 counters, of which two were earmarked for senior citizens and differently-abled persons.

These counters functioned from 9.45 a.m. to 5.30 p.m. on all four days. Besides, there were about 15 counters that functioned as help desks. About 25 college students and 10 tax preparers were also there to help tax payers.
