Swamy: State resolution on Sri Lanka ridiculous

June 12, 2011 02:10 am | Updated 02:10 am IST - CHENNAI:

Janata Party president Subramanian Swamy on Saturday described as “not only ridiculous but also highly damaging for India's national interest,” the Tamil Nadu Assembly resolution asking the Centre to impose economic sanctions on Sri Lanka. The resolution arose out of a U.N. report holding human rights excesses during the war against the LTTE in Sri Lanka; but the report also blamed the Tigers for provoking and committing human rights violations in equal measure. The resolution made no mention of that, he said in a statement.

He said that Ms. Jayalalithaa should concentrate on providing electricity and restoring law and order in the State. Her election victory was solely due to the Tamil people's anger over the 2G spectrum scam. She must use the mandate for the benefit of the people of India and not the LTTE. He expressed the hope that she would henceforth stop making any reference to Sri Lanka's past human rights violations and concentrate on persuading the Centre in ensuring that the island nation's Constitution was sufficiently devolved and decentralised powers in order to enable the Tamils there to live with self respect.
