Kalpetta: Power Minister M.M. Mani has said that the government was planning to conduct a feasibility study on the possibility of generating power from waterfalls and minor irrigation projects in Wayanad. Announcing the district as totally electrified at a function held here on Saturday, Mr. Mani said that hydroelectric projects were more suitable for the State as they could generate power at a low cost.

“As the cost of generating power from thermal power plants and wind plants is too high, the government has decided to resume the construction of Pallivasal and Mankulam hydroelectric projects, even though they had been stalled earlier after spending nearly ₹500 crore,” the Minister said.

Though the Forest Department had cited technical issues in the electrification of 244 houses in three forest settlements in the district, they would be electrified soon, Mr. Mani said, adding that the department had electrified houses in the Edmalakkudi forest settlement in Idukki after laying underground cables at a cost of ₹5.50 crore.
