The district unit of the Anti Corruption Movement has urged the Coimbatore Corporation Commissioner to clean up the administration and look into allegations of corruption.
In a letter to the Commissioner, the association said though the width of the Race Course circular road was only 40 ft, it had been deliberately presented as a road of 140 ft width to facilitate construction of many high-raise buildings.
Likewise there were several buildings in the city in violation of building plan rules. In most of those cases, for granting approval, the builders paid bribe to officials concerned on a square foot basis and this was an open secret, the association alleged and wanted the Commissioner to look into the issue.
It also wanted the civic body to remove encroachments of pavements by commercial establishments. As a result of such encroachments, pedestrians were forced to walk on the roads resulting in traffic congestion.
Dumping of debris and poultry waste, discharge of dyeing effluents and mushrooming of new encroachments near the lakes continued unabated in the city as could be seen near Ukkadam Big Tank and Valangulam. The corporation should stop such destruction of the water bodies, the association said.
It also drew the corporation’s attention to big commercial establishments and hospitals not paying property tax by fraudulently claiming that they were charitable institutions, theft of drinking water, unauthorised speed breakers in violation of the Indian Road Congress recommendations and illegal collection of excess parking fee in corporation parking lots.
