Rejuvenation camp for elephants begins

Forest Minister Dindigul C. Srinivasan inaugurated the rejuvenation camp for 52 elephants at Theppakadu Elephant Camp in Mudumalai Tiger Reserve (MTR) on Friday.

Mr. Srinivasan fed the elephants at the camp, which also included a rescued calf.

The elephants are to be fed a special diet comprising fruits apart from having their health parameters monitored by veterinarians.

Mr. Srinivasan told reporters here that the 48-day- long rejuvenation camp will end on March 28. He said that ₹ 61.016 had been sanctioned for the same.

Mr. Srinivasan said that the State Government was treating the incident where a four-year-old boy was reportedly killed by a leopard in Valparai very seriously.

He added that the government was monitoring the situation.

The Minister said that the Forest Department was authorised to trap and re-locate wild animals that stray too close to settlements.

The Minister inaugurated a souvenir shop at the Theppakadu Reception Centre.

Innocent Divya, the Nilgiris District Collector; Chief Wildlife Warden, T.P. Raghunath; Field Director of MTR, Srinivas R. Reddy; Ashok Upreti, Managing Director of TANTEA; Deputy Director of MTR, V.A. Saravanan; and District Forest Officers, K. Rajkumar (Nilgiris South) and P.K. Dileep (Gudalur); were present.
