A demonstration held in Coimbatore on Thursday in protest against Vairamuthu's remarks on Andal.

Around 150 members of various Hindu organisations led by Indhu Makkal Katchi leader Arjun Sampath and Kumaragurpara Swamigal of Kaumaram Mutt, Coimbatore, staged a protest against lyricist Vairamuthu’s article on Vaishnavite saint Andal.

At the Coimbatore South Taluk office, they shouted slogans urging the Mr. Vairamuthu to apologise to the Hindus. Mr. Sampath, who sought the State Government’s intervention in the issue, wanted the lyricist to apologise at Srivalliputhur temple.

He said an insult to Andal, who was beyond caste and creed, was an insult to Tamil and wanted the film director Bharathiraja and MDMK leader Vaiko not to support Mr. Vairamuthu.

Kumaragurupara Swamigal said the lyricist had hurt the sentiments of the Hindus and should tender an apology. He also wanted others to not play around with the sentiments of the Hindus and said while atheists could propagate their ideology they should do so without hurting others.

The protesters, including 50 women, sang Andal pasuram and conducted prayers at the venue.
