Condemning the hike in bus fare as it would adversely affect people of all walks of life and also the recent attack on Sivaganga CPI(M) district secretary Kandasamy by the police, members of the party staged a demonstration at Veerappanchatiram bus stop here on Monday.

District secretary R. Raghuraman, and State committee member K. Thangavel, led the protest.

They said that the hike in bus fare had put tremendous pressure on daily wage earners, and office-goers, as they solely depended on buses for transportation.

They said that the government had failed to increase its revenue from other sources and instead passed the entire burden on to common man.

They added that people were already suffering from price rise of essential commodities whereas their earnings had not improved.

The steep hike in bus fare will make more workers go jobless as they cannot spend more than 30% of their earnings for transportation, they added. They urged the government to withdraw the hike immediately.

They condemned Thirumurugan, Sub-Inspector of Police in Sivaganga, for allegedly beating vegetable vendors at the market place. They said that after the district secretary intervened, the SI had abused him and took him to the station and beat him. They demanded registering of a case against the SI after placing him under suspension.
