President Pratibha Devisingh Patil arrived here on Tuesday evening to attend three functions in the city.

She was received at the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International airport by Governor M.K. Narayanan and Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee.

On Wednesday, she will lay the foundation stone for a Metro Railway extension project at Joka — located on the city's southern fringes — in the presence of Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee, Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee and the Governor.

Ms. Banerjee had specially invited the President for laying stone for the 16.75-km Metro Rail extension project that will connect the city's southern fringes with the central business district at B.B.D. Bagh through 13 stations.

Later Ms. Patil will attend the 175th anniversary celebrations of the All India Marwari Federation.

She will also inaugurate the National Management Centre at a city hotel.

Senior police officials said security had been stepped up at all the three programme venues.

The President is scheduled to leave here for New Delhi on Thursday morning.
