Plea to implement job guarantee scheme

September 15, 2017 07:48 pm | Updated 07:48 pm IST - ERODE

Urging the Union and State governments to implement the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) in 42 town panchayats in the district, over 500 people under the banner All India Agricultural Workers’ Union (AIAWU) took out a rally and submitted petition to the collector during the weekly grievances day meeting here recently.

They said that thousands of people in these panchayats are dependent on agricultural for earning their daily wages. Due to severe drought, agricultural activities were not carried in the panchayats in the past six months leaving them job less.

They said the government had raised the number of working days under the MGNREGS from 100 to 150, but the scheme was not implemented in town panchayats. The elected representatives failed to meet us and know the problems as we are forced to fight for our rights, they added.

They said that over a crore people were rendered jobless as the scheme was not implemented in 528 town panchayats in the State. They said that their only source of income would be to go for jobs under the scheme and denying the implementation of the scheme in town panchayats is affecting them. They urged both the governments to take effective steps to provide them jobs.

Later, they took out a rally from Sampath Nagar to Collectorate and submitted individual petitions to the District Collector.
