Panel visits village

Three weeks after a 15-year-old girl was allegedly raped by three persons in a private bus in Omalur, a team from the National Commission for Scheduled Castes, Chennai, visited the village and held discussions with senior police officials and revenue officials on Wednesday.

The incident happened on June 5 when the bus was halted at Narayanampalayam village at about 10.30 p.m. The bus drivers S. Manivannan (31) and K. Perumal (22), and conductor P. Murugan (35) committed the crime. The girl escaped from them and narrated the incident to the villagers who nabbed the three and handed them over to the police.

Later, one more conductor, G. Vijay (20), who had raped her many times on previous occasions, too was arrested. The case was registered under the Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes Prevention of Atrocities Act, 2015. The victim’s parents were given ₹ 4 lakh as compensation by the State Adi Dravidar and Tribal Welfare Department.

On Wednesday, a team comprising A. Eniyan and S. Lister, both members of the commission, visited the victim’s parents. Later, they visited the victim at the Government Reception Home for Girls. The team visited the Omalur Police Station to inspect the bus, and held discussions with Mettur Sub-Collector J. Megnath Reddy, Omalur Deputy Superintendent of Police M. Chandrasekaran, and tahsildar Rajendran.

Mr. Eniyan and Mr. Lister told reporters here that a report would be submitted to the commission in New Delhi, and steps would be taken to provide free education to the victim.
