The Supreme Court on Tuesday upheld the conviction and life imprisonment of ex-MP Anand Mohan Singh in the 1994 murder case of Gopalganj District Magistrate G. Krishnaiah.
A bench headed by Justice A.K. Patnaik dismissed the plea of Singh, a gangster-turned-politician from Bihar, who had approached the Supreme Court against his conviction and life imprisonment in the murder case.
Singh, who was the leader of the then Bihar People’s Party (BPP), was accused of inciting a mob accompanying the cortege of a BPP leader to lynch Krishnaiah on December 5, 1994. The BPP is now defunct.
The officer was pulled out of a car, beaten up mercilessly and then shot dead.
Singh, a former MP from Sheohar, was awarded death sentence under Sections 302 (murder) and 109 (abetment of offence) of the Indian Penal Code by Additional District and Sessions Judge R.S. Rai on October 3, 2007.
However, the Patna High Court in its December 2008 verdict had commuted Singh’s death penalty to life sentence, against which he had moved the Supreme Court.

will he stay in jail for his entire life or get out of after 14 years?
It is a glad news to hear, but is really astonishing to see that it took 18 years to complete the trial in different courts.
Such MPs sends a message that Election system in India must be revisited to declare eligible candidate from a constituency for contesting election, may be UPSC like organization conduct a written, interview exams to declare limited number of eligible local candidates to contest elections for MP or MLA.
The point is even for the grade IV employment candidates have to go through such procedure, seeing the number of individuals nomination filling forms are going high from a constituency it would be right to introduce such system for screening good candidates for election.
@ I fully agree with Krishnamurthyyayavaram!
There are several Indian politicians and leaders who committed serious crimes including crimes against humanity as holding offices. There criminal elements must be investigated and punished if India wants to progress as a global power.
It’s one of the most atypical and astonishing news which I came across in an epoch of scams like 2G, CWG, and the rest. SC has shown it is not biased towards MP or Political parties. Such news should be made headlines to egg on people to file more cases against such politician.
This is one of the cases where a gangster-turned politician has committed a murder & sentenced to death! There are many more such politicians in our midst but not tried & punished! What will happen to the nation if the prime law makers of the country are gangsters & murderers??In the name of democracy we cannot afford to allow such a thing to happen! Election Reforms should be initiated to ban & dis qualify any candidate with criminal records proved or unproved!India has a surplus of good, sincere.& honest people who are waiting to serve the nation but are denied the chance to contest in the Elections-(State or central)
One down - but many more to go I hope
