Two members of the Communist Party of India (Maoist) surrendered before the police in the State’s Purulia district, senior police officers said on Tuesday.
“Bijoy Singh Sardar and Moumita Paharia surrendered before us. They have also handed in two double-barrel guns. Their surrender has been approved by the State government,” C. Sudhakar, Superintendent of Police, Purulia, told The Hindu on the telephone.
Both Mr. Sardar and Ms. Paharia were active since 2008, and were associated with the Dalma squad and Ayodhya squad of the outfit, along the West Bengal-Jharkhand border, he said.
The Trinamool Congress government has revised the aid to the rebels, providing a monthly stipend for the Maoists who have surrendered. On surrender, the rebels get a monthly stipend of Rs. 2,000 for a period of three years, along with a fixed deposit of Rs. 1.5 lakh.
Along with this, the people who surrender are eligible for Rs. 25,000 – Rs. 2 lakh, depending on the weapons they surrender to the police.
