An assistant sub-inspector of police in Odisha's Nuapada district bordering Chhattisgarh was kidnapped by Maoists on Tuesday and subsequently killed.
Kruparam Majhi (42) was posted at the Dharambandha Police Outpost. The incident took place when Majhi, along with a constable Debanarayan Sahu, was escorting a water tank loaded on a tractor to the nearby Central Reserve Police Force camp. About 10 to 12 armed Maoists waylaid the two policemen riding a motorcycle at around 11 am. The naxalites asked them why they were supplying water and other provisions to CRPF personnel.
While the constable managed to escape, the ASI's body was found hours later about three kilometres from the CRPF camp. The Maoists set ablaze the tractor.
“Three bullets were pumped into the ASI,” Director General of Police Manmohan Praharaj told reporters. “The heinous crime will not dampen the spirit of the security forces carrying out operation against naxalites,” he asserted.
Sources in the intelligence wing said that the Mainpur division of Chhattisgarh carried out the killing.
Dharambandha area is one of the most Maoist-affected regions in Nuapada district. Because of its proximity to the Sunabeda Wildlife Sanctuary and a porous border with Chhattisgarh, it has been safe haven for Maoists.
Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik termed the killing an inhuman and a barbaric act. He announced that an ex gratia of Rs. 8 lakh would be paid to the next kin of the ASI. A special family pension equal to the last salary drawn would be given to his family, he said.

Can't believe someone would 'escort' a water tanker into Maoist infested area on motorcycle! All down to lethargy and our police not being provided proper equipment. What's wrong with a proper mine protected personal carrier. All our police forces working such dangerous places must be provided with such things
Maoist problem slowly arising and now it became headache.I'm a resident of Odisha and staying near Maoist belt and also worked there. In 2002-03 though Maoists were there, they didn't harm common people and also a little to police. So,common people never oppose them. But, slowly they are increasing in the name of job, poverty, land and threatening people who oppose them. They are looting money and explosive from mines and often threat rich people from their villages to pay money.
Govt should not negotiate with them on kidnapping and should act on them strictly.I wonder how they are getting AK-47,56 rifles and able to bring so interior part of the country after crossing two to three state borders.Central Govt should use army to nab them.
Naveen Patnaik should be personally held responsible for this. No Government servant joins the service to meet this fate and they don't deserve it too. But politicians play vote bank games and sacrifice the helpless Government servants to stay in power.
Maoists are always ruthless. They pretend to fight for poor. They are
causing immense hardship to poor.Poor people are caught between corrupt
govts and the deadly Maoists.Civil rights activists do not care for poor
constables killed by Maoists.Govts lack political will.Poor continue to
bleed.
