Netaji Subash Chandra Bose was one of the greatest patriots who fought for India's
liberation from the British. I would consider his contribution as much, if not more,
than that of Gandhiji. Whereas the latter's "awakening" came about when he was
kicked out of the first class compartment in South Africa, Netaji never agreed to
serve the British government, despite qualifying for the ICS with flying colors in
London. It is a historical fact that when Netaji defeated Gandhiji's nominee
P.Sitaramih to become the Congress President for a second term in succession,
seeing the displeasure of Gandhiji to the outcome of result, he quit the Congress
Party for good. Ironically, it was Netaji who addressed Gandhiji as "Father of the
Nation" for the first time. But, the congress never gave Netaji his due recognition
for his efforts to see India free. It is gratifying to hear that the government has
decided to give heritage status to his ancestral house at Kodalia in South 24-
Parganas district.
