An anti-Islamic post on Facebook, making objectionable comments about Mohammad Paigambar, created tension in the Malwani area here on Wednesday. Nearly 1,000 people gathered, demanding police action against the accused. The police have blocked the page and booked unknown persons for hurting religious sentiments.

According to senior police officials, one person registered a case with the Kandivali police on Tuesday night on the objectionable post.

“The post used vulgar language. We have registered a case under Section 295 of the Indian Penal Code against unknown persons as it seems the profile was created on a fake identity,” a senior officer told The Hindu .

“We approached the court today [on Wednesday] morning and got orders to block the objectionable page. The Cyber Crime Cell is investigating the case,” said Himanshu Roy, Mumbai Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime).

Additional Commissioner of Police (North region) Sunil Paraskar said, “Around 1,000 persons gathered and demanded action against the accused. We assured them that a case has been registered and action will be taken against. There was no tension. The situation was peaceful.”

Police sources said shops in the area were closed for some time, but normality was restored within a few hours.
