In two separate incidents in the city, a college student was stabbed by her classmate and a woman from Nepal was raped by three men.
Payal Balsara, a third year student of Bachelor of Management Studies from Chetna College in Bandra in suburban Mumbai, was stabbed by Nikhil Bankar on Saturday. Bankar later stabbed himself. Both were admitted to hospital in Bandra, where Bankar died. The girl is still fighting for her life.
“We cannot confirm whether the attack took place through unrequited love. Further investigation will reveal the real motive behind the attack. Right now, we can only say that both were friends,” Vishwas Nangre-Patil, Additional Police Commissioner (West region), told The Hindu .
Two arrested
In the other incident, a Nepali was raped by three different people. Two of the accused were arrested on Saturday. According to the police, the victim had come from Nepal to visit her husband who works in a factory in Mumbai. However after reaching the address given by him, she was told by the factory owner that he had already left for Nepal.
“She was then allegedly raped by the factory owner. The victim was also raped by a factory worker, who was sent to give her food,” the police said.
Meanwhile, the police raided a lodge in Madanpura area on a tip-off that a woman from Nepal was going to be sold into prostitution. “The woman was found with another person who is claimed to be a friend of her relative in Mumbai. He had also raped her,” the police said.
The woman registered a complaint with the Nagpada police station.
