Humayun Kabir, Congress MLA from Rejinagar in Murshidabad district is all set to quit the party and join the Trinamool Congress.

Mr. Kabir, who met Trinamool chairperson and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee at the Secretariat on Monday, said he would resign from all the posts he presently held in the Congress on November 16.

Ms. Banerjee welcomed him to the Trinamool Congress, he told The Hindu over telephone on Tuesday.

Mr. Kabir, however, said he would not resign as MLA and would wait until the Congress approached the Speaker of the West Bengal Assembly and initiated action against him as per anti-defection law.

Differences with MP

On the reasons behind his decision, he cited differences with Congress MP and Union Minister of State for Railways Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury. Questioned whether he has been offered a ministerial berth by the Trinamool, the MLA avoided a direct reply. “I will not return to Congress even if I am not given a ministerial berth.”
