Angry over the gang rape of a 23-year-old girl in Delhi, Bollywood star Amitabh Bachchan on Tuesday once again expressed shock regarding the incident and said the system should change its laws to punish the culprits.
“I hope she recovers. I hope the system changes its laws to punish such terrible culprits who propagate violence against women,” Mr. Bachchan said, after being honoured with an award for community leadership by the South Indian Education Society (SIES) here.
“I always believe that women are half the strength of this country. They are fifty per cent of our strength. Women should be given dignity and value in our society,” he said.
Mr. Bachchan, who was honoured with a cash prize of Rs. 2.5 lakh, also decided to donate the amount to deceased constable Subhash Tomar, who succumbed to his injuries on Tuesday, following the protest on Sunday at India Gate.
Senior BJP leader Sushma Swaraj, technology expert Sam Pitroda, and Chinmayananda mission head Swami Tejomayananda were also honoured by the SIES with national eminence awards.
