September 10, 2012 11:59 pm | Updated 11:59 pm IST - NEW DELHI:

While debates are on in the country on how much money was lost in the Coalgate, in a shocking incident in West Bengal, a 35-year-old woman sold three of her daughters for just Rs. 155 to buy food. The girls are aged between three and nine.

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), taking cognisance of this disturbing incident based on media reports, has issued notices to the Collector and Superintendent of Police of the South 24 Parganas district, seeking reports from them within four weeks.

The woman, Purnima, took the step as the last option as her husband Uttam Haldar, a plumber, drove her away with the children from the house.

It may be recalled that media had reported a similar incident in Araria district of Bihar in July.

In this case, poverty-stricken 30-year-old Shantu Khatun sold her four-month-old son for just Rs.62 to a Nepalese couple to buy food.
