Police have arrested two persons and are on the lookout for six others who have been named in a First Information Report (FIR) lodged in connection with a murder of a whistleblower, Nandi Singh, in Bishnu-Tegjuri village in upper Assam’s Dhemaji district.
Singh, who had complained of irregularities in distribution of Public Distribution System (PDS) items by some fair price shops in his village, was hacked in front of his wife on September 2. He died on way to hospital.
In the FIR, victim’s wife Saorthi Singh named eight persons who she alleged were involved in the murder.
Investigating officer in the case, Second Officer of Dhemaji police station K.C. Das told The Hindu that a case (No. 244/2012) had been registered under Sections 147, 148, 149, 448, 326 and 302 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and two persons have been arrested so far.
Dhemaji Deputy Commissioner M.S. Manivannan said he was informed by the Superintendent of Police that Nandi Singh had lodged a complaint with the Chief Judicial Magistrate, about being threatened by some people.
The CJM asked the police to register a case, conduct a probe and take necessary action.
“Local enmity”
“Nandi Singh had lodged complaint against local PDS agent. But he had not lodged any complaint against the Supply department. Local officials in the Food and Civil Supplies Department had conducted a probe on the basis of his complaint. I have sought details. I have also asked the SP to conduct a thorough investigation. We have to ascertain if those involved in the murder of Nandi Singh included those against whom he had lodged complaints of irregularities in distribution of PDS items at the local fair price shop. Initial reports said that it was a case of local enmity,” said the Deputy Commissioner.
