Five people were killed, three were injured and more than 100 villages were cut off in Vidarbha due to heavy rains in the last two days.
All the deceased are from Wardha District which recorded 108 mm rainfall in last 24 hours, according to the District Information Office (DIO) of the district. Rajesh Gedam, Ashok Sawait and Ajay Dound from Wardha were swept away in the flood waters and Chandrabhaga Raut and Sumitra Kukade died due to collapse of their house wall.
500 houses damaged
Around 500 houses were also damaged in the Arvi tehsil of Wardha. The district administration has opened relief camps at five places in the district.
Last week, five people were killed in Amravati district due to a temple wall collapse triggered by heavy rains.
In Gadchiroli, more than 100 villages have been cut of due to heavy rains. The bridge connecting Bhamragad to Gadchiroli is submerged, disconnecting all the villages in Bhamragad division with Gadchiroli.
Top officials of the Gadchiroli Police and the Central Reserve Police Force including Superintendent of Police (SP) Suvez Huque who were on a visit to Naxal-affected Bhamragad are held up there for the last two days, according to the Gadchiroli police.
106 mm rainfall
Gadchiroli received 106 mm rainfall in last 24 hours, according to Gadchiroli DIO.
In Bhandara district, due to increase in water level of Wainganga river, 25 gates of the Gosikhurd dam were opened on Tuesday. The district received 149 mm rains in last 24 hours.
According to officials from Yavatmal, a warning has been issued to the people of Chandrapur, Wardha, Yavatmal and Amravati district because the gates of the Uppar Wardha dam may have to be opened any time if the rains continue.
