In another incident of campus violence in West Bengal, teachers of a college in North 24 Parganas were attacked, allegedly by students when they tried to prevent unfair practices during university examinations on Friday.
The teacher-in charge of the Chandraketugarh Sahidullah Smriti Mahavidyalaya lodged a police complaint against students of the Basirhat College, who appeared for a Bachelor of Arts Part I examinations there.
Nine teachers including Akikul Islam and a non-teaching staff member, Gaffar Ali Mondal, had to be hospitalised for serious injuries.
The police have registered a complaint under non-bailable sections such as attempt to murder and assault, or criminal force to deter a public servant from doing his duty against an unspecified number of students of the Basirhat College.
Following the incident, the Chandraketugarh Sahidullah Smriti Mahavidyalaya remained closed. At the Basirhat College, where students from the other institution are appearing for the examination, only one student turned up on Saturday.
“We have sought a report from both colleges regarding the incident,” Professor Kaushik Gupta, Vice-Chancellor of the West Bengal State University, told The Hindu .
The university would conduct its own inquiry into the incident, which has once again invited strong condemnation from the academic community.
Earlier in January this year, the principal of a government college at Raiganj in Uttar Dinajpur district was assaulted allegedly by supporters of the Trinamool Congress.
In the incident at Majdia in Nadia district, supporters of the Students Federation of India were allegedly involved, and at Rampurhat College in Birbhum district, the police suspected that the Trinamool student wing was behind the attack on the principal.
