Six persons, accused of killing a non-staff member of the Rabindra Bharati University (RBU) here on Friday, were remanded in police custody till August 3 on Saturday by a court here.

Five students of the audio-visual arts department and an assistant professor of the same department got involved in an altercation with 59-year-old Basudev Nandi over parking of a motorcycle on the campus during which Mr. Nandi was allegedly punched in the chest by the students.

The assistant professor, Surajit Chanda, allegedly instigated the students to attack Mr. Nandi.

Heart patient

Mr. Nandi, who was a heart patient, died after cardio-respiratory failure. The incident sparked a huge commotion on the campus as members of the non-teaching staff association almost came to blows with members of the teaching staff association who were trying to defend Mr. Chanda.

“The six accused persons were arrested by the city police on Friday and were produced before the Sealdah court on Saturday following a medical check-up of the accused. They were remanded in police custody for five days,” Jawed Shamim, Joint Commissioner of Police (Headquarters), said.

Campus politics

A section of the students alleged that campus politics was behind the incident since the accused students were members of the Students' Federation of India while Mr. Nandi was a leader of a Left-leaning employees' union till recently before defecting to a Trinamool Congress-affiliated union.
