July 08, 2011 03:23 am | Updated 03:23 am IST - GUWAHATI:

Right to Information activist and farmers' leader Akhil Gogoi was released from judicial custody on Thursday night. Mr Gogoi, who was undergoing treatment at the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), was granted bail by the Gauhati High Court on Wednesday.

A high drama preceded his release as a strong posse of police force was deployed at the GMCH premises and his lawyers claimed that the police was conspiring to arrest him again immediately in some fresh cases.

Mr. Gogoi was arrested in connection with June 22 violence that broke out near the State Secretariat here during a protest programme led by him under the banner of Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) against eviction of hill settlers of the city. Immediately after his release Mr. Gogoi, while coming out of GMCH, urged KMSS workers and supporters and the people to build up a strong resistance movement against mega hydel projects in Arunachal Pradesh, including the 2000 megawatt Lower Subansiri hydel project of the National Hydropower Electric Power Corporation . He also warned both the Centre and the State against any move to transport the turbines for the hydel project through Assam.
