The Organisation of the Islamic Conference (OIC) has invited chairman of the Hurriyat Conference (moderate), Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, to attend two meetings in New York on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly's 65th session.

In a communication to Mr. Farooq, OIC Secretary-General Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu invited him to the Foreign Ministerial meet of the contact group on Kashmir, which includes Pakistan, Iran, Niger, Saudi Arabia and Turkey.

Mr. Farooq has also been invited to attend the annual meeting of the Foreign Ministerial group at the U.N. headquarters.

The Hurriyat spokesman said that while the Hurriyat Conference has kept the OIC informed about the current situation in the Valley, the visiting team will reinforce the “urgent need for a just and permanent solution of the Kashmir issue in the current context of grave human rights violations being perpetuated upon the people of Kashmir by the Indian State.”

The team, he said, will also impress upon the OIC to play a proactive role in persuading India and Pakistan to resolve this long outstanding conflict in accordance with the wishes and aspirations of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
