In an incident of theft in a running train, a couple from Kochi, working in Dubai, was robbed of Rs.1.5 lakh and passports when the Mumbai-Ernakulam Mangala-Lakshadeep Express in which they were travelling passed the Kanhangad railway station in Kasaragod in the early hours of Thursday.
The couple, who boarded the train from Kalyan near Mumbai on August 1 morning after they reached Mumbai airport from Dubai on July 31, was on their way home in the train when the theft happened. Venu Shankaran (31), his wife Lipsy (27) and their two children discontinued their journey to Ernakulam for completing the formalities involved in lodging the complaint. Ms. Lipsy also had a miraculous escape after she fell off the train when the thief jumped out.
According to the couple, the handbag of Ms. Lipsy was snatched by an unidentified person while she was breastfeeding her youngest child on the lower berth in the S5 coach of the train around 3.30 a.m. When she saw him fleeing with the handbag, she ran after him after leaving the child on the berth. While she grabbed the bag, the thief jumped out of the train. In the scuffle, she also fell off the train. Mr. Shankaran, who woke up when he heard the sound, immediately pulled the chain. By that time, Ms. Lipsy, who suffered minor injuries, was assisted by a passer-by who took her to the station. The couple said that the handbag contained 10,000 UAE Dirham (nearly Rs.1.4 lakh) and Indian currency totalling Rs.6,000 as well as the passports of Ms. Lipsy and the children with valid visas, a mobile phone, identity cards, ATM cards and other documents.
