35 houses damaged in the district on Monday
After a brief respite for a couple of days, the south-west monsoon has intensified in the district.
The district witnessed heavy downpour on Monday, especially during the early morning hours.
As many as 35 houses were damaged on Monday. Of these, 14 houses each were in the Kottayam and Vaikom taluks, while six were in Changanassery and one in Meenachil, according to district authorities.
In all, 115 houses have suffered partial damage and two were destroyed in the district since the onset of the monsoon. The total loss has been estimated at Rs.7.17 lakh.
Following the incessant rain, many roads have become pothole-ridden. These include the M.C. Road in Kodimatha, the Thiruvanchoor Road in Kanjikuzhy, the Iranjal road, and the Kottayam-Kumarakom road. Moreover, the low-lying areas in Nattakom, Aymanam and Thiruvarppu panchayats continued to remain inundated.
The District Collector has declared a holiday on Tuesday for all educational institutions in Kottayam and Vaikom taluks.
Free ration has been distributed to 6,694 rain-affected people. A total of 375 persons of 90 families have been shifted to 16 relief camps in the district.
Agricultural loss has been estimated to be about Rs.2.21 crore. Crops in nearly 1,680.36 hectares, including 1,539 hectares of paddy, have been damaged, according to the district authorities.
