Low attendance marked the second day of the indefinite strike called by the pro-Left and BJP State employees and teachers organisations, in protest against the State government’s decision to implement contributory pension scheme, on Wednesday.
As per the figures provided by the District Collector’s office, 60.65 per cent of employees in the district attended work on the day. The previous day’s figure was 53 per cent.
Service organisations said the strike had become stronger on the second day, with an increase in the number of offices and schools shutting down.
“The attendance level is low even in offices where the ruling party unions are having a majority. The strike is going stronger amidst threats from the government and ruling party unions. There is no change in attendance levels from yesterday,” said K. Rajachandran, district secretary, Kerala NGO Union.
The KSRTC functioned normally with schedules running as usual. Commuters were apparently relieved with the private bus strike getting over.
