The Kerala Muslim Cultural Centre-UAE chapter (KMCC) has announced a scheme, Save a Heart, Save a Family, to facilitate free bypass surgery of poor patients.
The project is being implemented with the support of the D.M. Foundation, MIMS Charitable Trust, and Confident Group.
Two hundred patients would be identified in the initial stage and offered free surgery and cashless treatment for six months.
Explaining the project to the media, Indian Union Muslim League national treasurer and Industries Minister P.K. Kunhalikutty said the C.H. Centre in Kozhikode would shortlist the beneficiaries.
He said there would not be discrimination on the basis of religion or political affiliation in identifying the beneficiaries. He said the cost of bypass surgery was on the rise. It was in this context the KMCC came up with the initiative, which would also get the moral support of the government.
Addressing the media, Minister for Panchayats and Social Welfare M.K. Muneer said the cooperation of voluntary organisations was the need of the hour to meet the treatment needs of the poor.
The government should also get the support of such organisations to undertake helpful schemes in the sector, he added. The surgery of shortlisted beneficiaries would commence in the first week of January. As per the scheme, the Malabar Institute of Medical Sciences would offer bypass surgery at Rs.85,000 a person.
