Chief Minister Oommen Chandy has said the much-delayed work on the Railway Coach Factory at Kanjikode here will start this year.

Speaking after laying the foundation stone for the Palakkad Government Medical College here on Monday, the Chief Minister said he had held talks with the Union Railway Minister and the Railway Board Chairman during their visit to Kozhikode on January 2. They said they were trying to find a partner for the construction work. The work was being taken up under the Public Private Partnership mode, he said.

IIT promised

The Chief Minister said the State would get an IIT in the 12th Five Year Plan. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had promised it in Kochi recently. “If Kerala gets an IIT, it will be started in Palakkad as the State government had promised earlier,” Mr. Chandy said.

The new medical college, the coach factory and the promised IIT would catalyse the development of Palakkad, one of the backward regions of the State, he added.
