Environmentalists and cultural leaders, under the auspices of the Darsana Cultural Society, will organise a public rally here on November 10 in support of the people's agitation in Kasaragod demanding a total ban on Endosulfan. The rally will begin from T.B. Junction at 5 p.m. and conclude at the panchayat maidan after going round the town, said its organisers here on Monday.
A documentary film produced by M.A. Rahman, Arajeevithangalku Oru Swargam , which highlights the life of victims in the Endosulfan-hit Swargam, will be screened at the panchayat maidan after the rally. The society had organised a cultural meeting on November 3 against the ‘negative' attitude of the Union government in banning Endosulfan, which not only created environment problems but also caused physical deformity and mental retardation among the young generation in areas adjoining the cashew plantations where it was sprayed aerially.
Endosulfan is sprayed in cardamom plantations in Idukki district, they said adding it is supplied to farmers in fake bottles and there are no effective measures to control its use in plantations. Its large-scale use could be checked only by the imposition of a ban by government agencies, said society secretary E.J. Joseph.
