Death of girl: IG begins probe

October 29, 2010 08:48 pm | Updated 08:49 pm IST - ALAPPUZHA:

Inspector General (Crime Branch) R. Sreelekha on Friday began a probe into the death of 12-year-old Shreya, whose body was found lying in a pond on the premises of the Accept Krupa Bhavan at Kalarkode here on October 17.

Shreya, who was attending a personality development camp at the institution, went missing and her body was found a few hours later in the pond. Though the local police could not find any leads as to how Shreya died with the post-mortem report also not throwing much light on the incident, the girl's parents submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan demanding a proper investigation.

Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan, who visited Shreya's parents here last week, had assured a thorough probe, after which Ms. Sreelekha was entrusted with the job. Ms. Sreelekha, who arrived here on Friday, inspected the pond and the room in which Shreya was last seen, after which she questioned two priests and three nuns who were present in the institution on that night. The other staff of the institution too were questioned.

Ms. Sreelekha later called upon Benny and Suja, Shreya's parents at their residence nearby the Accept Krupa Bhavan. However, the senior police official, when contacted, said she could not comment on the investigation now.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (Alappuzha) B. Ravindra Prasad, Alappuzha South Circle Inspector V.K. Sanal Kumar and South SI K.G. Anish accompanied Ms. Sreelekha.
