Flash flood in the Siruvani causes panic

August 19, 2010 10:35 pm | Updated August 20, 2010 03:42 pm IST - SIRUVANI (PALAKKAD):

A flash flood in the Siruvani river, downstream of the Siruvani dam, on Thursday afternoon washed away two hanging bridges across the river in the Chittur area of Attappady.

Heavy rain for two hours led to the flood, creating panic among people living on either side of the river. But the shutters of the dam were not opened as the water level was 6.5 metres below the full reservoir level (FRL), District Collector K.V. Mohan Kumar said. Water from the reservoir, under the control of the Water Resources Department, is supplied to Coimbatore city. Mr. Mohan Kumar said the water level in the river was receding.
