Anti-piracy cell registers cases against 1,010 for downloading the film
In what is billed as a first-of-its-kind initiative in the country, the anti-piracy cell of the Kerala Police has registered cases against 1,010 persons for illegally uploading or downloading on the Internet the Malayalam movie Bachelor Party.
This includes a Keralite engineering student based in Vaashi, Navi Mumbai, and the Coimbatore-based website Tamil Rockers, a press note issued here on Saturday by the anti-piracy cell said.
Over the last 10 days, 30,000 persons were found to have seen Bachelor Party illegally on the Net. The IP addresses of 1,010 persons have already been identified. The anti-piracy cell, the hi-tech cell, and Jadoo Tech Private Solutions — a Kochi-based private firm which did the cyber patrolling for the police — have initiated steps to collect the names and addresses of the persons whose IP addresses have been traced.
An investigation by the anti-piracy cell revealed that the illegal viewing of the film was done by persons based in the U.S., the U.K., the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Kuwait, Ireland, the Philippines, China, South Africa, Uganda, Algeria, Botswana, Kazakhstan, and Pakistan. Within the country, the illegal viewings were reported from New Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai, Kolkata, Rajasthan, Lucknow, Kapurthala, Tirunelveli, Coimbatore, Puducherry, Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Ernakulam, Kozhikode, Kottayam, and Palakkad.
The CD/DVD/mobile phone/Internet/memory card rights for Bachelor Party were secured by Sajithan, who owns the Thrissur-based firm Movie Channel. The CDs of the movie were brought out by this company on August 19, 2012. Within two days, Mr. Sajithan submitted a complaint to the anti-piracy cell against the site Tamil Rockers and against 16 IP addresses from where the film had been illegally uploaded to the Net. The subsequent investigation was carried out by a team of police officials headed by the anti-piracy nodal officer and Inspector General of Police B. Sandhya.
A month ago, the CDs of the films Ordinary and Grand Master released by the same company were illegally seen on the Net by 30 lakh and 12 lakh persons respectively, the press note said. In July this year, the anti-piracy cell arrested Abhilash from Thrissur while he was illegally uploading the film Snehaveedu on the Net. Legal action was also initiated against 30 persons working for social sites that illegally hosted Malayalam movies. About 15 laptops were also seized from different locations in Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka.
Investigation by the anti-piracy cell of the Kerala police is currently on in 10 cases of Internet misuse. About 70 cases of copyright infringement have been registered in Kerala and outside and about 100 persons have been arrested in this connection.
The illegal sharing of Bachelor Party on the Net comes at a time when the arrest of 15 persons in April for pirating movies from theatres and the consequent non-availability of pirated CDs had led to a substantial increase in the government’s income from theatres, the press note added.

Only the persons or companies which received the illegal copy and uploaded to Internet should be punished. The viewers should not be punished.
This is silly. Viewing films over the net whether it is legal or otherwise will go on and the government is wasting its time and machinery as usual in such petty issues. The producers should devleop their own methods to protect their copy rights. If their CDs can be copied then why complain about copies on the net? Does it affect their revenue? Do they sell their CDs all over the world? Do they screen the movies all over Kerala at least? These people dont know what they are doing. Why harass innocent people when they cannot stop black marketing in movie tickets!
Anti Piracy Cell should give awareness to public regarding the cyber
crime proceedings as majority of the public are unaware on the
consequences that had to face in the wake of cyber illegality,so my
opinion on this regard is that the Anti Piracy Cell should put up
advertisements on print media with full specifications of cyber crime
proceedings listing each and every nuances which should be viable and
it should reach the common man using internet facility, ads on
electronic media could just convey the matter as a Prima Facie but a
detailed approach should be made prior to initiating any legal
proceeding.
I am not sure whether it is correct in charging anyone who viewed it
online,as it is not downloaded and disclaimer should be added by video
sharing website. The production house's lack in intent to protect the
film and tracing looks like a conspiracy. What should we say when film-
makers copy movies which are made outside india ?
Uploading is illegal. but watching it from a public website like you
tube is more of an ethical issue. No one can arrest you or sue you for
watching a video on youtube, no matter what it is. Youtube has its own
panel for screening each and every video uploaded so they are the only
ones responsible for the others viewing it. There exists no law that
forbids a person from viewing youtube or a facebook video.
Neethi Sathyam @ Are you sure, that you and your friends dosn,t
installed even a single programme in your mobile,TV or Laptop without
pay...? why the people buying electronics garbage's and getting
expensive internet connection, only for look a few mails in a year...!
how you are sure, that you watching internet content legal or illegal..?
Copyright act was there before also with regards to books. If you buy a
book, is it illegal to give it to your friend to read? Is it illegal if
we donate that to a public library where anybody can use it? Is it
illegal if your dependents inherit it? So why these software laws made
different?
Wonder when Amal Neerad and malayali producers will get charge sheeted for -
(1) pirating the story of Bachelor Party, from Hong Kong movie - "Exiled"
(2) a dialogue-by-dialogue copy of "Four Brothers" into malayalam movie called "Big B" , and
(3) lifting the screenplay of "Traitor" and making "Anwar"...!!!
Does our law say that if you steal from a pirate, you are a convict, but the pirate is not ?
if the production team need non-piracy ,first of all they should create movie CD & DVD 's copy restricted as this is done by the Hollywood industry. then there will be no illegal copying and piracy, actually it is the fault of movie makers and production team. if the production team & government need non piracy , firstly they should take the precaution. its not appropriate to put some teenagers into illegal cases & formalities, when the makers itself can stop piracy by creating copy protected CD & DVD's ...
It's funny to see the comments from SK and Vijaydas giving lame
excuses for watching pirated version of movies on internet. Please
understand something, whether politicians loot lot of money or
somebody acts as an agent to police you should not watch or share
movies and music as per law - period. Buy original CDs and show to
the world that you are a law abiding citizen first.
downloading is also arrest-able offense? what are the possible
punishments. hindu should have mentioned IPC codes. by the time case
comes to hearing it would be 2-3 years in hell
I would want to say in representation of NRI Keralaites that the
problem we face is, wehave access neither to the malayalam movies in
theatre nor in Cds in the countries we reside , then our only chance
of seeing a Malayalam movie is online,So I request the distributors to
officialy allocate servers online where we can pay and watch the
movies...What will happen otherwise is we all are driven in to
watching the low quality prints of illegal malayal movies that is
floating online...When back at home ..I always love going to the
theatre to watch movies..but I dont ahve achance to do that here..
These kind of things happen in USA, where an organization called MPAA sues people for downloading copyrighted content from the internet. Copyright infringement is a civil case, people should not be "arrested" for that. For example, In tamil nadu the goverment misuses gunda law and arrests people for copyright infringement and put them in jail upto for an year.
Don't the cops have any other worthwhile things to do than tracking people who copy movies from one computer to another?
In a perfect example of the pot calling the kettle black, Amal Neerad
the biggest of all plagiarizer's, move has been accused of causing
copy right violation, by torrent downloading.
Iam sure the "hactivist" groups are going to raise this issue with
the producers of the original foreign movies and put Mr Neerad and
his producer also in the dock!!
It is hightime that the consumer do not have to go through the ordeal of being branded as criminals for downloading files from the internet.
Differentiate between (a) uploading commercial matter which should be treated as an offence if done knowingly and (b) downloading files available on the internet.
If this is the case, it is better to avoid viewing Malayalam Movies even from theater. All recent Malayalam films are copy of other language (mainly foreign films)without any copy right purchase. What will happen if the original foreign owner file a case against all those who see copied Malayalam films in theater.
Excellent initiative and the anti piracy cell should take this movement very seriously and all the people involved in it should be punished. There are strict laws available in India and this illegal uploading should be stopped. See the models in China, Saudi Arabia and in UAE. We need commitments and will power to implement our laws, so be the first initiative to stop this illegal activities on internet. Please should try to understand the positive use of internet, and note that internet is not the place to do all the illegal activities, this is mostly happening in India so we should act strongly and teach a lesson to these so cold technical people and bring then under the law. The Anti piracy cell should take stern action by applying imprisonment, apply fine or give them warning as per the nature of their activities, urgently
Agent Jadoo is a hacking tool from APC of Kerala police ...? IP
information and location easly you can get any of torrent downloading
applications. then why they stealing "informations" from worldwide
computers..? Malayalam film Bachelor Party direct "Copycat" from
Chinese movie named 'Exiled'. Low budget movie like Batchelor party
can't get or bear remake right such a international box office movie
'Exiled'. then what piracy act will take against the movie
producers..? Now these days, simply you can watch "youtube" movies
from latest smart TV , even you are not aware about copy right laws.
so how they become victim.
Piracy is not stealing, it is merely copying. In India, where
millions can't afford to go to fancy cinemas or buy the heavily
priced original DVD's, piracy is a way of life and always has been in
India. From books to movies to music, people don't mind piracy
because they too can enjoy what someone with a higher paycheck can
pay for an original and enjoy.
This is not the West. We still have 30% of our population living
below the poverty line and they too need entertainment, affordable
entertainment (though i'm sure these people don't have the web but
i'm talking about piracy in general).
We don't have to follow the American way but can create our own.
Also, let's not do this to show the world that India's doing
something about piracy. Because we just can't afford to. People in
our nation don't have an income like the US or Singapore to buy
original DVD's and original Microsoft software.
Anti piracy cell has done well in locating the piracy. Had they got
the illegally uploaded copy withdrawn immediatley many unintentional
youth would have escaped from being illegal viewers.
Prevention of crime is also the duty of all citizens and police
officers. There would definitely be some inadvertent youngster who has
down loaded the illegal copy without knowing the consequences.
Authorities could note for future to get illegally uploaded material
out of circulation immediately.
When politicians loot a lot of money in the form of scams, nothing will
be done. But when people see a movie on the internet, first-of-its-kind
initiatives will always be done. What an amazing system!
