The Jana Maitri Suraksha project has turned out to be a multi-faceted boon for the police, with crime coming down, awareness being spread ontraffic safety and also by helping police elicit information on illegal activities more easily, Inspector General of Police (ErnakulamRange) B. Sandhya has said.

Speaking at a district-level review of the project at the Alappuzha North Police Station here, M. Sandhya, who is also the nodal officer for the project, said the concept was at present being implemented in 41 police stations across the State. The Government had decided to extend this to 100 police stations apart from making the system in the existing 41 stations much more effective. The extension was a result of the public demanding that the project should be introduced in more stations, she said.

The Jana Maitri project was also garnering attention from other States as well, with several States sending delegates to study the community policing initiative here, Ms. Sandhya added.

District Panchayat president R. Nazar, inaugurating a seminar on the project, said the success of Jana Maitri in police stations where it was being implemented was proof that the public would acknowledge the positive side of the police force, if the police was ready to act in a professional manner.

District Superintendent of Police A. Akbar presided over. Aryad Panchayat president K.D. Mahindran, academician Kalleli Raghavan Pillai, Deputy Superintendent of Police K.M. Tomy and Jana Maitri CRO G. Rajendran also spoke.
