Security has been stepped up at the three airports in the State following a nationwide alert sounded by the Civil Aviation authorities on receiving intelligence inputs indicating a terrorist plan to hijack a domestic flight around Independence Day.

The airport authorities have taken steps to comply strictly with the security parameters laid out by the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security. They have decided to introduce a secondary ladder checkpoint for frisking passengers boarding flights.

Visitors will not be allowed in terminal buildings and the operational area till August 20.

Civil Aviation sources said the secondary ladder checkpoint, an extra security filter introduced during high alerts, was in addition to the security check at the main gate and the security hold area by the elite Aviation Security Group (ASG) of the Central Industrial Security Force. Security personnel of the airlines, in coordination with the ASG, would carry out the check at the secondary point.

High alert

Bomb detection and dog squads at the airports have been placed under high alert. The ASG has been asked to be in close touch with the State police as the elite force is in charge of the security of the terminal and the airport premises only.
