Directive to fill unused wells, quarries

July 25, 2012 01:45 am | Updated 01:45 am IST - KASARAGOD:

The district administration has directed the local bodies concerned to take steps to fill all the abandoned and unused wells, bore wells and quarries to ward of possible threat to human and animal life.

Notices to owners

The District Collector has asked the local bodies to prepare a list of unused wells and issue notices to owners in this regard, official sources here said.

Water contamination

The directive has also been issued in the wake of the instances of waste being dumped in abandoned wells and quarries leading to the contamination of groundwater.

The owners could erect fence or compound walls as a stopgap arrangement and should seal all the unused bore wells with immediate effect, they said.
