Old cases can be withdrawn: Minister

Says State will abide by High Court directives

June 24, 2012 09:33 am | Updated 09:33 am IST - MALAPPURAM:

There is nothing unusual about the government withdrawing old cases, Home Minister Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan said here on Saturday.

All governments had withdrawn old cases, he told mediapersons here after taking salute at a passing-out parade of a contingent of the Malabar Special Police (MSP).

Mr. Radhakrishnan said the government would not do anything in violation of the directives of the High Court.

The government would examine the observations made by the court on withdrawing cases. The government would take decisions about re-investigations after considering the reports of the inquiring agencies. The import of the evidence gathered will play a crucial role, he said.

The investigation into the twin murder at Kuniyil, Areekode, was on the right track. The government will not interfere in the investigation, he said adding that the charges against P.K. Basheer, MLA, should be dismissed as allegations. There was no evidence to warrant the arrest of the legislator, Mr. Radhakrishnan said.

The Home Minister said threats against police personnel investigating sensational cases would be viewed seriously. The government, he said, was duty-bound to provide protection to them.
