Heart-rending scenes unfolded at Kothanalloor and Uzhavoor, the hometowns of P.K. Vineetha and Remya Rajappan, during their funeral on Monday, as thousands gathered to bid them farewell. State honours were accorded to the two nurses, who died after rescuing eight patients from the fire at AMRI Hospitals, Kolkata.

Remya was cremated on the premises of her residence, Mecharil House, at Uzhavoor. Her brother Rajesh lit the funeral pyre.

Remya's mother Usha, who has been in a state of shock ever since she learnt of her daughter's death, remained inconsolable and collapsed during the cremation. Her father passed away nearly five years ago.

Revenue Minister Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan, Government Chief Whip P.C. George, Thomas Isaac, C.F. Thomas (both MLAs) and District Collector Mini Antony were among those who paid their last respects to the deceased.

There was a steady flow of people to the Pulickal House where Vineetha's body was kept. After funeral prayers at the St. Mary's Church at Kurumulloor, her body was buried at the church cemetery. Vineetha's mother Mary had a minor discomfort during the prayers, following which she was forced to rest.

Those who paid homage included Bishop Sebastian Thekethecheril of the Vijayapuram diocese of the Latin Church and MLA Suresh Kurup.
