Anxious parents, family members and friends queued up overnight before some reputed schools in the city late Friday night to get application forms for admissions for their children for the next academic year.
More than 12 hours before applications were to be given, a long queue formed outside St. Joseph’s Boys’ School on Museum Road, while people started milling around at the Sophia High School in High Grounds by around 9 p.m.
While application forms will be given between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Saturday at Joseph’s, they will be handed out between noon and 3 p.m. till Wednesday at Sophia’s.
Armed with bedsheets, towels, short eats and some even their dinner, people occupied the footpath as queues swelled by the hour. “I want to put my daughter in a good school that is also closer to my residence. I don’t mind standing or sitting on the footpath throughout the night,” said Chandra Kumar, who lives at Palace Guttahalli and is a software engineer with a leading company in ITPB. Mr. Kumar, who was keen that his daughter gets a seat at Sophia’s, said he had taken leave for his paternal duty. He said though he was standing in the queue overnight, the fate of the admission would be known only in April and it also depended on his daughter’s performance at the interview.
Outside the gate of St. Joseph’s Boys School, the crowd was bigger as application forms would be given only on Saturday, unlike at Sophia. “There is no other way except to be here overnight as application forms are given for a short duration and that too only for a day,” said a parent, who gave his name as Irfan.
