India has evolved over the last six decades to become a functioning republic that the world looks up to, Deputy Commissioner P.C. Jaffer said in Bidar on Saturday.
“We have not only made creditable achievements in the field of economic development, but also in ensuring social justice. Improvements in the election process and governance have turned India into a model for developing countries,” Dr. Jaffer said at the Republic Day celebrations after hosting the national flag.
“The democratic system is unique as the electors choose representatives for three levels of government. The urban and rural local bodies have been granted constitutional status and work towards welfare of residents in their own ways,” he said.
Several initiatives of the Union and State governments had ensured that equal opportunities were created for people of all castes and classes in various fields.
He recalled the contribution of B.R. Ambedkar in drafting the Constitution that remains the foundation of the democratic process in India. “The electoral process has undergone considerable reform too. We started with 17.32 crore registered voters in the first elections, and have reached a stage where the Election Commission of India oversees a complicated process wherein over 77 crore voters can exercise their franchise in the general elections,” he said.
“The State government is committed to the development of Hyderabad Karnataka. Rules are being framed to implement various provisions of Article 371 (J),” Dr. Jaffer said. “Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar is preparing an exclusive budget for the development of agriculture and allied fields. This will help backward districts such as Bidar,” he said.
Students of various schools presented a cultural performance. The highlight was the Malkambh by boys and girls of Sri Channabasaveshwar Gurukul in Karadyal in Bhalki taluk.

Small-scale Industries Minister Narasimha Naik has said that the Constitution has enabled deprived sections in getting their due.
Speaking after hoisting the national flag at the Republic Day celebrations at newly constructed Sports Ground here on Saturday, Mr. Naik said the Constitution, which has stood the test of the time, had ensured equality to all citizens.
