Activists of Centre of Indian Trade Union (CITU) staged a dharna outside the premises of the Deputy Commissioner’s office here on Wednesday demanding fulfilment of various demands, including providing social security, for the working class.
Organised under the banner of the district unit of the CITU, the workers raised slogans demanding effective measures to halt skyrocketing prices of essential commodities.
The frequent hike in prices of petroleum products has fuelled an increase in the prices of essential commodities putting the lives of the common man to hardship, the protesters alleged.
The CITU leaders charged the governments with weakening the labour laws by allowing contract system in many sectors. The contract system is nothing but a licence to exploit the workers, they alleged.
Failure
The government had failed to effectively implement the labour laws on many occasions resulting in employers gaining the upper hand, CITU district president Gandhinagar Narayanaswamy said.
The protesters demanded removing the limit set for bonus and Provident Fund and urged increasing gratuity amount, among other things. Secretary B.S. Nagarathna and joint secretary B.V. Sampangi participated.
