The Cauvery crisis took a new turn on Monday with four MLAs and one MP from Mandya, belonging to the Janata Dal (Secular), submitting their resignations to the party’s State president H.D. Kumaraswamy.
They are said to have succumbed to pressure from G. Made Gowda, president, Mandya Zilla Raitha Hitarakshana Samiti (MZRHS), who is spearheading the agitation against the directive of the Cauvery River Authority (CRA) to Karnataka to release 9,000 cusecs of water to Tamil Nadu.
Appeal
Mr. Made Gowda had called upon elected representatives in the district to resign for the cause and appealed to the former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda to seek their resignation.
N. Cheluvarayaswamy, MP from Mandya, and legislators Kalpana Siddaraju, C.S. Puttaraju, M. Srinivas and A.B. Ramesh Bandi Siddegowda, representing Maddur, Pandavapura, Mandya and Srirangapatna respectively, have handed their resignation letters to Mr. Kumaraswamy.
Speaking to presspersons Mr. Kumaraswamy admitted that they had given him their resignation letters following a demand from Mr. Made Gowda.
He said Mr. Deve Gowda was meeting Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to urge him to send an official team to Karnataka to assess the ground realities. Handing over the resignation letters to the Speakers of the Parliament and the Assembly hinged on the outcome of this meeting. Asked whether he himself would quit, Mr. Kumaraswamy said he would take a decision depending on what transpired at a meeting of JD(S) legislators on Tuesday.
However, he said he doubted whether anything would be gained by quitting his post. “All legislators and MPs from the JD(S) are prepared to sacrifice their posts to protect State’s interest, but the resignation should not end up as a farce.”
He, however, was confident that Mr. Singh would review the decision of the CRA, considering water storage in reservoirs and drought in the State.
“The onus is now on Mr. Manmohan Singh to correct the injustice done to the State by sending an expert team to assess the situation,” he said.

We all agree that we have to share and care for others. But every one is bent up on imposing the sanctions on each other by stopping the facilities/requirements.
We have also see whether one is having sufficient water to share. Our govt. & other agencies who are supposed give the correct data to central govt. is not do so.
One has to think about this & take correct decision & make people to live in harmony
Why do Karnataka treat Cauvery as their sole personal drain for flushing out excess water when it's convenient to them ? With a completely closed mindset that not a single drop of water will be released, why do they ask for talks for water "sharing" when their intention is to disobey every order, unless its about not releasing water ?
People don't understand that why TN is fighting and Karnataga is
fighting!!! karnataga is simply fight for bullshit reason and TN is
fighting for essential needs. many places in TN is depending on this
water and most of farmers cannot run the farming if they dont have
this water.. WATER:no one can say its belong to us..
Best way to solve this problem can be joining all the rivers in India but
i really don't know which Indian government is going to do that.
This is a publicity gimmick by JD(S) and to gain popularity without
rational thinking. Are these representatives elected only Kaveri issue
and will their resignation result in any improvement of the situation?
Water resources belongs to all and there has to be scientific way of
sharing has to be the basis for all natural resources.
I live abroad. My manager, an european, had visited Bangalore few times for business. He had seen the eccentric public demonstrations near Vidan soudha. On our first introduction, when he understood that I am from South India, he asked me if i come from one of the states that fight for water. That was very shameful.
My Bangalore friends in facebook have mention that 'we ourselves have scarcity, how can we be asked to share?'. The thought that sharing cauvery water is a charity is wrong. The lower delta region have more ownership of the river than the upper delta region. The reason is the lower delta region suffers more when there is a flood. The lower delta region is critical to ensure the safety of the upper region.
When will sanity prevail?
Rivers flowing the lenght and breadth of our country are a source of to be utelised by all the states through which the flow.
Just because Cauvery tekas its birth in Karnataka it does not become the property of this state-(pardon the statement of revered seer).
These sixty six years we learnto disagree with each other ,not understand the difficulties of the neighbour,in the state,in the street,in the same house.
We lack discxipline in all walks of life-a bus,a queue 00everywhere.
Emotions teke the drivers seat and wisdom(?) takes the backseat.
If those rivers flowing from north entering Karnataka are also resticted, what do we do?
Let those farmers of karnatka go to tamilnadu, see the conditions there and ask the farmers of T Nadu to see the situation here and let there be fair deal. This can be DONE WITHOUT THE POLITICIANS BUTTING IN
Too much of divisive politics played on the issue; all natural resources have to be utilised for maximum benefit of people; NO way river can be stopped flowing into neigboring State; pity; long ago, there was an article on Linking the Ganga with Kaveri, by veteran CPRamaswami Iyer (Independance day supplement of TheHindu) explaining the need to utilise our rivers to help drought and also prevent floods ! Later too, Dastoor project mooted; but none took off due to parochial attitude of different States - Unfortunate eh!
Time we understand we have to give and take and live like a joint family and NOT fight over such issues; God bestow better sense !
Remember these legislators assumed office after swearing to protect the constitution and now they are instigating people to rise against one another for their political gains, is it not violation of their oath? is it not gross disrespect of the constitution? Nationalize all natural resources at once and remove state boundaries on the basis of language, if not, we will not survive as India and Indians.
Wonderful politics are being displayed by our elected representatives.
Is this Unity in diversity or Total disunity. Why not power from Neyveli be stopped to Karnataka or for that matter all goods going to karnataka is stopped from Tamil nadu. Does these wonderful MP's and MLA's want to witness such a situation. Where exactly are they leading the people of Karnataka. It is a well known fact that tamil nadu and karanataka and other states live in a harmonious way whereas these elected representatives are just injecting venom into innocent people's mind and trying to win brownie points in their political score card.
Karnataka state has gone berserk.
It is extremely sad and tragic to watch these two States fight against each other with regular frequency on this issue. When an authority has been set up and something has been agreed upon, one should honour the terms of this agreement- especially so when the Supreme Court orders so. I honestly feel that the costs that both the States have incurred because of bandhs, etc over so many years, they could have constructed reservoirs, check dams etc in their respective States to improve irrigation facilities. Guess, if one follows common sense and spirit of co-operation, politicians will be out of business.
It is a shame on us, that none of us have the mentality to share the natural resources within our country. The Cauvery issue is completely politicised. Both TN and Karnataka has to go into the "Give and Take" policy mode and sort out things out of court.
