Higher Education Minister C.T. Ravi on Monday informed the Legislative Council that the government is considering setting up of the Bangalore North University, following the recommendations of the Karnataka State Higher Education Council (KSHEC) and the Karnataka Knowledge Commission (KKC).

He said a committee, constituted under the chairmanship of N. Rudraiah to study the need of bifurcation of Bangalore University, submitted its report in 2009. The committee recommended formation of three universities.

However, considering the suggestion of the KSHEC and the KKC, the government was considering setting up of the Bangalore North University with headquarters in Hoskote. Over 300 colleges under BU would be under the new varsity, he said.

Raising the question, Y.A. Narayanaswamy of the BJP demanded trifurcation of BU. Going a step ahead, the former Minister Ramachandra Gowda suggested the division of BU into four independent universities to improve the quality of education. Members representing graduates constituency supported the demand.

However, Mr. Ravi assured the House that the government would consider the suggestions and take a final call.
