What have the Mysore police got to do with cloth design?
Well, the rising number of chain-snatching incidents in the city perhaps “forced” them to come up with some strategies, even novel ideas, to curb the menace.
The police roped in some tailors to stitch different types of neck scarves and high-neck jackets that could be worn by women on their dress, including sari and salwar kameez, for covering ornaments, mainly the mangalasutra and gold chains. Policewomen have recommended some designs — and tried them out too.
As chain-snatching incidents happen mostly when women go in for a stroll, the police feel that scarves or jackets, if worn, can deny the offenders an opportunity to strike.
Commissioner of Police K.L. Sudheer is optimistic. “I strongly believe that the measure will work and minimise the incidents, as the offenders cannot be sure whether their targets are wearing gold chains. This is only one of the steps taken to address the issue.”
He says the police will try to talk women organisations, NGOs and Sthree Shakti Sanghas into promoting the initiative.
“If people support, and cooperate with, us, we can address any problem. The [number of] incidents has come down, but not stopped. It is not just Mysore alone that is witnessing chain-snatching; cities such as Pune, Coimbatore, Mumbai, too, are facing this problem because of the rise in gold prices,” he explains.
The police launched the initiative after conducting a study. “We heard from the victims that the offenders usually confirm whether women were wearing gold ornaments before striking them. If gold ornaments are invisible, they will hesitate to strike.” Since it is risky to display gold chains during an early morning walk with not many people around, women can cover their neck, he says.
Women interested in looking at the designs can visit the Lashkar police station, where scarves and jackets have been displayed.
“We have other plans to check such incidents. There are many things in the offing. We shall announce them soon,” says Mr. Sudheer.

DO YOU HAVE A SUGGESTION TO PREVENT CHAIN SNATCHING?
The new sartorial style proposed by the khaki men to prevent chain
snatching is not an efficacious move. On the contrary it might be an
open invitation for the chain predators to continue with their criminal
misadventures. The pros & cons of the proposal apart, at least the
police seems to be serious about mitigating the menace. The public
should, in collision with the police, brain storm and try to come out
with more out of box remedies.
A novel idea indeed.Absolutely, this would minimise the chain snatching incidents to a greater extent. But, to what extent it could be put into use depends on the price of the scarf or suit, since, the middle class and below, may not be able to purchase,if the price of the scarf or suit is not within the reach of their purchasing capacity. However, awareness among the people could some how persuade them to follow suit, given the volatile price of the yellow metal day by day.
Wow.....Brilliant and Innovative ideas by our in-competent policemen. They can't control major crime and can't stop small things like chain snatching but have time to sit and design clothes. So they expect every woman in Mysore to change their sartorial style and start living differently (like not to step out of house after 6PM) just because these monkeys can't do the job they are hired for. Really great and really sad looking at the way this country is going to the dogs. Shame
Lets tell the women folks to wear burqa. Shouldn't that solve all the problems!?#@%!
Nice initative launched by the police during the summer time.
Not only are the women more easliy identifiable, the subsequent heat stroke would make it chain snatching easier.
Apart from whether this would curb any menace or not, this is a very interesting development, that it shows there is scope for innovation in many fields of life. This may or may not work, but this gives the Police in other places an inspiration to come up with innovative solutions. This is surely to be appreciated.
The next step would be compulsory burkhas for all women to stop
molesters. Then this would follow - " women should go out of their
houses only if they are accompanied by males related to them." Sound
familiar?
The police should concentrate on apprehending criminals. Women already
have enough restrictions on them as it is. Stop further victimizing the
victims.
What absolute brilliance! some of the comments too! Hear ye all women.
Wear scarves because you will be robbed. Wear sackclothes else you will
be raped. Our police have decreed. Dear commissioner, I can envisage
women walking down MG Road with zipped jackets on top of saris and men
with locks hanging from their pockets(pickpockets around, dont you
know). Truly visionary. But perhaps you could also just once in a while
catch some of these 'thieves' and ensure they get proper punishment? I
assure you its possible. Other countries have done it.
I support the step taken by Mysore Police to prevent chain snatching crime, it will indeed helps in bring down the crime rate to some extent. But,this cannot be the solution as chain snatchers will resort to some other crime to fulfill their desire. Such menaces which has originated from the evil mind can be tackled only by introducing them to spirituality and meditation, because the cause of all evils and bad deeds is weak mind which in turn weakens the self confidence to do good deeds/earn money in a righteous way.
By implementing some new things we can surely minimise these type of inceident. But we have to keep on updating with the new new ideas
A new fashion accessory - the 'Mysore Scarf'
[People wear the chains for a show.] Exactly: one of the main reasons that women wear the mangalasutra is so that they will not be harassed by men who think they are unmarried (and thus "fair game"). Unfortunately, if they do wear the mangalasutra they become fair game for a different kind of rakshasa. Such is life in the Kaliyuga. Hurry up, Kalki.
most of the women wear gold for "showcase purpose"... if they were advised to cover then they wont wear that at all.. it will be good, if the authorities come with the dress code it will also helpful and it will help in reducing the eve teasing and rape cases.
Its better not to wear gold at all, also not buy gold . This will avoid people robbing houses and wont need to pay for safe deposit box in bank
If the women have o hide their chains under the scarves or the jackets they might as well leave the chains at home. People wear the chains for a show.If they cannot show the chains they can leave them at home.
Let me get this right - any lady wearing such a scarf is more prone to attacks as they probably are wearing ornaments. Brilliant!
Nice idea!!
Hats off POLCE--This measure is certainly commendable.Similar gestures are welcome in very many things across their daily routine work.
Wearing high-neck scarves would confirm to the chain snatchers that the woman is wearing some gold !!! Those not wearing any gold would not bother to wear these. It becomes easy for the chain snatchers to identify their targets.
But good initiative, if the ladies are really willing to cover themselves.
