Heavy rain lashes Salem

Various parts of Salem district experienced widespread rainfall accompanied by heavy winds on late Friday evening.

The rainfall which commenced at 8.30 p.m. continued till midnight. The low lying areas of Hasthampatti, Kichipalayam, Suramangalam, Ammapettai, Kondalampatti in the city were inundated affecting the free movement of vehicles. Some parts of the city also went powerless.

The hill station of Yercaud experienced heavy rain accompanied by thunder in the night.

Thalaivasal, Sitheri, Periyeri, Govindampalayam, Aragalur, Omalur, Kadaiyampatti, Veeraganur, Poosaripatti, Sankagiri, Vazhappadi too got sharp showers.

Widespread rainfall on the Western Ghats on Thursday led to heavy flow of water in the River Paalar flowing on the Tamil Nadu – Karnataka border.

The river Paalar remained dry for the last one year due to the repeated failure of monsoon and it started receiving heavy flow of water from Friday morning.

The heavy rain on the western ghats led to increased inflow into Mettur Dam.

Kadaiyampatti experienced the maximum rainfall of 69 mm in the last 24 hours that ended at 8 a.m. on Friday. The following is the rainfall recorded in other parts of the district during the same period: Veeraganur 51.2 mm.; Aanaimaduvu 50; Omalur 47.4; Yercaud 38.2; Sankagiri 31.2; Vazhappadi 28.6; Gangavalli 24.2; Mettur 23.2; Attur 22.4; Edappadi 21.2; P.N. Palayam 19; Salem 15.7; Kariyakovil 15; and Thammampatti 10.8 mm.
