Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar on Monday ordered the shutting down and barricading of old, unused bridges in the State and also ordered a safety audit of such bridges.

The order, tweeted by the Chief Minister’s Office(CMO), comes four days after a footbridge collapsed in South Goa’s Curchorem town killing two people.

“As a measure of public safety, in the first instance and on an urgent basis all old unused bridges are required to be barricaded and all side access, need to be blocked with appropriate measures. Status report on the measures taken, needs to be submitted by May 31 to this office,” the tweet said.

A portion of a 50-year-old bridge collapsed on Thursday after a crowd of nearly 30-40 people gathered on it to watch a suicide attempt.

“Thereafter all such old bridges, whether in use or not, shall be inspected for its stability and safety and such audit reports shall be submitted to this office by June 30, along with measures for rehabilitation,” it added.
