March 12, 2010 10:33 pm | Updated 10:33 pm IST - IMPHAL:

Armed extortionists who raided the house of Pungshubam Bimola, (51), adhyaksha of the Imphal East Zilla Parishad, shot and wounded her husband, on Thursday.

He was rushed to the hospital with critical bullet wounds.

The extortionists have been demanding from Ms. Bimola a share of the developmental fund which she refused.

When they injured her in the head and shoulder with pistols and tried to take her away, her husband Pungshubam Kunjo intervened. He was shot in the abdomen.

A number of adhyakshas had been attacked in the past for refusing to pay up. Police have registered a case.

Attack on Koteswor: case registered

Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh told the Assembly on Thursday that a case was registered into the incident in which Advocate General of Manipur N. Koteswor was shot on March 6.

The licensed hand gun of D.D. Thaisii, Tribal Development Minister, was seized. The official car of K. Ranjit, Works Minister, was impounded as the shooting took place inside the car.

The Chief Minister said that nobody was above law and once the enquiry into the incident was completed the guilty would be punished. Mr. Singh had earlier said that there was no need for an enquiry since the Minister admitted that it was an “accidental firing.”
